Why License

In accordance with local laws, pet licences are mandatory in the City of Brooks. In fact, licences are mandatory in nearly every community across North America. Why? Because licences help keep pets and the communities they live in safe. Licensing your pet will require specific information and proof. Having these items at the ready allows for the fastest experience. You have the option to upload a document as a saved or scanned file, or you may take a photo directly from your device on our upload page.

Spay/Neuter proof

This document is required to qualify for the discounted rate and is only needed once and will be saved to your pet’s profile upon upload for future renewals. This proof declaring that your pet has been spayed or neutered may be in the form of a statement or receipt from the veterinarian, shelter, or clinic that performed the procedure.

You'll create a profile for your pet, upload any necessary documents, process your licence registration, and receive purchase confirmations via email. Payment can be made using a credit card or Visa/Mastercard debit card. Each year, you just need to log in to your existing account and renew - it's super easy!

Pet licences are required for all dogs and cats living in the City of Brooks. They must be renewed every year prior to the expiration date. Licences expire exactly 365 days from the start date of the licence. You will receive reminders from us about upcoming licence expirations via mail, phone, and email.

  • A replacement tag is available for a $5.00 fee.
  • A spay/neuter certificate is required to qualify for the discounted rate.
  • Residents of the City of Brooks are allowed to own a maximum of 3 dogs and 4 cats per household.

You may have entered your address incorrectly or we may not have your address in the address database for your community. Please double-check all spelling and ensure you are using the abbreviated form for your street (e.g., type St instead of Street.) You may contact DocuPet Customer Care directly if you believe you reside within the licensing jurisdiction but your address is not being accepted by the system.

LICENSING OPTIONS, DATES, AND LOCATIONS

You may license in-person at Brooks City Hall located at 201 1 Ave W, Brooks, AB T1R 1B7.

No refunds are provided on licences purchased regardless of circumstances.

Licences expire exactly 365 days from the licence start date. If you renew prior to the upcoming expiration date, your pet's new licence will start the day after expiration, not on the date of purchase.

FEES AND FINES

There are no senior rates to license your pet.

No, service animals are subject to the standard licence fee.

No, there is no discount for licensing multiple pets. Each pet will be charged the appropriate licensing fee. 

As your community requires proof of sterilization for your pet in order to receive a discounted licensing rate, you will need to upload the appropriate documentation stating that your pet has been spayed/neutered to your online account. Once the documentation has been uploaded, you will be eligible to receive the new discounted rate. Otherwise, you can visit Brooks City Hall in-person and show proof of spay/neuter there to have your account updated.

For all online orders a processing fee is applied on licence purchases at a rate of 2.9% plus $0.30 per transaction.

Until we receive proof of sterilization, the system defaults to the unaltered licence fee. Once you upload the required documentation, your pet’s sterilization status will be updated and the correct fee will be applied.

No, each pet will only receive one free tag with their first licence via DocuPet. This tag doesn’t expire. If you’ve already received a DocuPet tag, your furry friend is good to go! If you’d like a new tag, you can purchase a standard replacement tag or a new designer tag during the licence order process or in our store.

PET INFORMATION AND PROFILES

If you are moving please be sure to update your address by logging into your online account and navigating to your Profile Settings page. Even though you are moving you’ll still be able to keep your pet's tag and access your pet's online account. However, your current licence may not be valid in the new community you are moving to. Please get in touch with the pet licensing provider in the new community you are moving to in order to find out more information.

All dogs and cats must be licensed within 14 days of moving into the City of Brooks.

No, there are no restricted breeds.

A maximum of three dogs and four cats are permitted per dwelling. To license animals in excess of this limit, you must visit Brooks City Hall in-person and obtain a Fancier’s Permit.

The following species are required to be licensed: Dogs and Cats.

All dogs and cats over the age of 3 months are required to be licenced.

DOCUMENT SUBMISSION

Spay/Neuter documentation is required to be provided the first time you license your spayed/neutered pet. Proof of spay/neuter is required to receive the discounted rate. Documentation requirements help to ensure that pet information is accurate which is critical for identification reasons.

If you can’t locate the document you received after the procedure was done, you will need to contact your vet to obtain your pet's records. Be sure to specify any and all pets you require documentation for.
Once you’ve got the paperwork in your hands, take a look to ensure:
